Recently OnePlus Co-founder, Carl Pei tweeted that the OnePlus 6 is their most successful device yet. Of course, according to the number of units sold and money they made. But according to what I was going to tell, the OnePlus 6 is a flop.
OnePlus has this strategy of launching a new smartphone every few months, Be it a “T” variant or a limited edition device. Last year when the OnePlus 5 launched, everyone ranted it and said it at least once in their reviews that it exactly looks like an iPhone 7 Plus and yes, to some extent it is an exact copy of it. but soon after the release of Verge’s “Making the OnePlus 5” video in which we came to see some unique creepy prototypes, this design choice made more sense. apart from the boring design, OnePlus 5 is a beast for its price.
After few months, OnePlus thought to hit the market again with a “T” variant of OnePlus 5. and they even received a lot of backlash for launching it so early with the same price tag of OnePlus 5. Without knowing this, there are some people who bought the Oneplus 5 just a few weeks before the launch of OnePlus 5T. OnePlus 5T, on the other hand, looks gorgeous and it is a killer deal as it has an 18:9 display and improved cameras for better low light photography. in one way, they completely cheated their loyal customers.
After the huge success of OnePlus 5T, some people started buying OnePlus devices simply to show-off just like Apple devices. which is, of course, acceptable considering OnePlus’s design choice and their entrance into premium price range. According to these two aspects, OnePlus was totally eligible for becoming Apple in Android.
Fast forward to few months before the launch of OnePlus 6, the time when every smartphone manufacturer started releasing iPhone X clones, Customers expected some unique design from OnePlus and started waiting eagerly until some series of tweets from OnePlus Co-founder justifying the NOTCH. He even deleted a tweet in which he says “Learn To Love The Notch’, after some huge outcry from fans.
OnePlus Co-founder Pete Lau even justified their choice to put a notch by taking this to OnePlus Community Forums.
While many of you have asked us not to increase the physical size of our phones, others requested larger and more immersive displays. The notch helps us accomplish both requests.
And yes, Notch do serve that purpose. but, who wants more screen real estate when the design looks ugly. Notch kinda defeats the whole purpose of making a unique design. For example, if you place OnePlus 6, Oppo R15, Vivo X21 on the same table [facing front], it will take you at least a minute to find out which one is which.
Surprisingly there are some people who like notch and there are some people who are ok with it and then there are people like us who are completely against the notch. End of the day, what matters most is a unique design. Only because of the Notch, the OnePlus 6 look like every other smartphone on the market which has a Notch. And of course, we do need speed, at the same time we also need something unique from OnePlus.
Now let’s go back to the year 2014. This was the time when android customers used to buy crappy looking Samsung flagships because they had no other choice. Suddenly OnePlus being a startup launched their first device, The OnePlus One which looks way cooler than those crappy designs. The design of this device is definitely a refreshment to android fanboys. moreover, it offered flagship level specs for a reasonable price which made OnePlusOne a Flagship Killer.
Now again fast forwarding to the OnePlus 6, things changed a lot. Samsung now offers beautiful unique designs whereas OnePlus is offering boring copycat designs. OnePlus now is a premium smartphone maker more than a unique smartphone maker. OnePlus surely made a lot of money on the OnePlus 6. But, it is a Flop.
Yes, OnePlus 6 is a Flop when comparing its design with OnePlus One. Yes, OnePlus 6 is a Flop because they neglected true feedback from their loyal customers and fans. Yes, OnePlus 6 is a Flop because it didn’t have most of the premium features even though it now costs a premium. Yes, OnePlus 6 is a Flop because it looks boring. Yes, OnePlus 6 is a total failure because it has a Notch. End Of Story.
